For the love of chocolate.
Almost everyone loves chocolate. In a recent study conducted by the Chocolate Manufacturers Association, chocolate was ranked as America's favorite flavor. Of course, the love for chocolate is not unique to modern society. As far back as 2000 years, the Mayans created a drink from crushed cocoa beans and chocolate dismissed as "food of the gods."
Chocolate can actually be good for us, some medical studies have shown some health benefits of eating chocolate. According to Larry Graham, president of the American Cocoa Research Institute (ACRI), the chocolate is very rich in antioxidants. In fact, it is one of the highest levels of antioxidant compounds, found in all foods, and may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Here are some recipes to help you get your dose of chocolate:
Ultimate Brownies
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine2 Cups sugar2 teaspoon vanilla extract4 eggs3 / 4 cup cup cocoa1 versatile flour1 / 2 teaspoon baking powder1 / 4 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk chocolate chips1 cup chopped walnuts (optional) Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 13x9x2-inch baking pan.
Place butter in a large bowl in the microwave. Microwave on HIGH (100%) of 2 to 2-1/2 minutes or until melted. Add sugar and vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well. Add cocoa. Add flour, baking powder and salt, beat well. Add the milk chocolate and nuts, if desired. Pour into prepared pan
Bake for 30-35 minutes or until biscuits begin to pull out the sides of the pan. Cool completely on a rack in a pan. Cut the bars. Makes about 36 biscuits.
Decadent chocolate truffles
1 / 2 cup butter, softened
2 1 / 2 cup sugar sugar 1 / 2 cup cocoa
1 / 4 cup heavy or whipping cream1 tablespoons coffee liqueur (such as Kahlua) * 1 / 2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, finely chopped
* You can substitute a teaspoon of chocolate extract
Beat butter in large bowl. Mix sugar and cocoa confectionery. Add alternately with cream, coffee liqueur and vanilla butter. Mix well. Refrigerate until firm. Shape into 1-inch balls. Roll in the semi-sweet chocolate coating. Refrigerate until firm. Makes about 36 truffles.
